How to 'Correctly' Promote Your Web Page

First of all, website promotion is a long term process, you should not rush into anything. To do this properly you need a slow methodical approach - follow each step one by one. They do not need to be all done at the same time.

Make Sure Your Website Works!

Now this might sound stupid, but if you go to all the trouble to advertising your webpage, the last thing you want is the visitor leaving straight away because the links don't work, or the text is hard to understand. You don't need flashy web pages with music and video clips, simple web pages work just fine.

You can pay for a web designer to create you some piece of art that is more an advertisement to his skill as an artist than to your web page.

Make Your Web Page Easy to List in the Search Engines.

Ok so your web page looks good, and all the links work, what next? Make sure that your website looks good to the search engines, this is just some minor tweaking to things called meta tags which contain key words and a description of your site. These are the things that the search engines use and display on their search results. To get the best results try and think like one of your consumers, what words will they use to search for your site? Read my step by step guide here, to creating keywords and description.

A Note on 'SALES' Website.

The internet is a great place to advertise you products for sale. The problem is everyone who has something to sell knows this. If you are selling something try and have a unique twist on your product. If everyone else is selling the same product the competition will be fierce, and this will cut into your profit. For example, try searching now for 'woolly hats' and see how many results you get. Millions I should imagine. Now try again searching for 'woolly hats for cats'. The difference is quite amazing. Now I am not suggesting that you should start producing head garments for our feline friends, but specialization is a must. Think how to make your product a specialty, as opposed to run of the mill.

Now You're Ready to Submit Your Web Page to the Search Engines.

In days gone by this would have been an automated process, now due to the amount spam bots, most search engines have catchpa's which stop automation. I think this is a good thing. I have compiled a list of the well known and not so well known search engines here. DO NOT DO THIS MORE THAN ONCE A MONTH! In fact I would go further, unless you have made radical changes to your website, after the first submission there should be no need to do this again. It will not increase your page rank, and may mark you site as spam. After this is done, the next step is to slowly increase your page rank. There are companies out there that promise a first page listing on the search engines, too good to be true? Probably, and as soon as they have taken your money you will not hear from them. Increasing your page rank is a slow, methodical process. Want a 'get rich quick scheme', don't worry there are plenty of scam companies out there just waiting for your cash!

Secondary Indexes and Search Engines.

There are many search engines that you have probably never even heard of, but don't think that just because you have never heard of them that no one uses them. Pay Per Click Advertising.

Registering with search engines is free, but this does not guarantee anything and may not get you as high up the list as you want. Contrary to popular belief though, advertising through Google Adwords or Yahoo marketing is not as expensive as you would think. I have created a step by step guide to using pay per click advertising so you can get the most out of your advertising budget. You can spend as little or as much as you like. I have used Google Adwords to good effect, for just pennies per click.

Quality not Quantity.

It is all very good getting thousands of hits, but if your sales website is not selling it's not doing its job properly. It is a lot easier to make your site more effective than it is to generate hits to your site. There are many Web Marketing Courses available on-line that will help you handle the hits you get to the site. You may want to consider using some of the free web analysis software if you have access to your webserver logs. If you are going to hire someone else - do your research first. It is important to know the basics first. This will increase your awareness of the scammers out there that promise you page 1 listings but deliver only on super specific search terms that none of your potential customers will ever use.

LINKS.

What used to be the most important way of gaining page rank on the internet i.e. ensuring that your site was linked to in many other sites, some webmasters cottoned on to this and setup free link for all pages. So although the amount of links now count towards ranking they are also graded from the page rank of the website that gives the rank. There are many back-link 'companies' around which promise to deliver 1000's of links to your site, but most of these are free for all link pages which in turn could actually have a negative effect your page rank. There are people who spend months of there time doing nothing other than acquiring links to there page. I hope you have better things to do with your time! I know I certainly do.

My advice when it comes to building links is quite simple and is as follows:

If you know of or find a website that you think would be useful to visitors to your site, add a link in your links page. As a result you make your page more useful, and you never know the favour may be returned. If you believe that the opposite may be true, why not contact the webmaster of that page and let them know that you are linking to their page as you like the content and would they consider a reverse link to yours.

The key to success in building successful links and having people link to your page is really down to the content of your site. The more useful and interesting, the more likely people will link to it! If someone offers you one, be very wary of what it is they are offering, and how much they are asking. My name is Dominic Parkes, I started life in computers when a 1 MB memory upgrade for UNIX DRS6000's was a quantum leap in technology.
